Saying that, just like GO:OD AM, The Divine Feminine is a great collection of songs that are for the most part unique in comparison to the rest of Mac’s music. Several songs on the album are just a little longer than they need to be, with random instrumental sendoffs and intros that really don’t do anything to enhance the project. While as a whole I enjoy The Divine Feminine, an album that averages 5.3 minutes per song can be tough to listen to. For context, the deluxe version of Watching Movies with the Sound Off is only 19 minutes longer despite having nearly twice the number of songs.

This song alone runs for eight full minutes, making up part of a track list that while only ten songs long runs for 53 minutes. “Cinderella” represents my biggest problem with this album its ridiculously long. In the last quarter of the song the beat shifts into a soft instrumental that moves the track back towards the love song archetype, complete with sung vocals from Mac that have an almost crooning-esque feel to them. The song “Cinderella,” which features TY Dolla $ign, takes a similar tone to many of the songs off of GO:OD AM, building off a simpler and calmer instrumental with lyricism that drifts slightly back into Mac’s more typically down to earth style. The energy starts to settle down over the course of the rest of the track list, but maintains the upbeat and sensual tone throughout that you’d expect from an album about love. “Dang” is immediately followed by “Stay,” which cranks the energy up even higher, with an energetic funky jazz sort of beat again paired with both rapped and sung vocals from Mac. Paak’s distinct funky vocal style in the refrain and several verses from Mac both singing and rapping throughout. This is made clear right from the albums start, with the song “Dang” combining an upbeat jazzy instrumental with Anderson. Mac seems to have approached this project with the intention to display far more emotion through his vocals and the tracks’ instrumentals, which can be seen reflected throughout the entire album. Paak, and Kendrick Lamar appearing next to others like Ceelo Green and Ariana Grande. As always with Mac’s albums, The Divine Feminine boasts an impressive and strange slew of features with contributions from artists like TY Dolla $ign, Anderson. This album can be partially be seen as Mac expressing his newfound love for Ariana Grande, as the two began dating during the project’s production (and she has claimed the song “Cinderella” is specifically about her). This marks a sudden shift away from the melancholy tone he embraced in his most recent bodies of work, instead following an upbeat and sensual tone that Mac seems shape into his personal portrayal of love. The Divine Feminine is unique amongst Mac’s Albums as it translates the typical psychedelic alternative rap/jazz style he developed on projects like Watching Movies with the Sound Off into what can only be described as an album of love songs. This album would ultimately be released in September 2016.
